By Latha Raja Shankar, M.D., Chief Medical Officer and VP of Health Care Delivery, Blue Cross and Blue Shield of New Mexico

As we recognize Fall Prevention Awareness Week this September, it’s important to discuss an issue that impacts many older adults: falls. They are the leading cause of injury among older people, and they can result in serious health complications. However, with some simple strategies and proactive measures, we can significantly reduce the risk of falling and lead a more active and fulfilling life.

Here are some essential tips and insights on how to reduce the risk of falling so you can enjoy your golden years with confidence and security.

Stay Active: Engaging in regular physical activity is crucial. Exercise can help strengthen your muscles, improve balance and mobility, and enhance coordination. Consider activities such as walking, tai chi or restorative yoga, which are gentle yet effective. Before starting a new exercise program, it’s wise to consult with your health care provider.

Review Medications: Some medications can have side effects like dizziness or drowsiness, which can increase the risk of falling. Make it a habit to review your medications with your health care provider regularly, and discuss any side effects you may encounter. Ask about alternatives if necessary, ensuring your prescriptions align with your health needs, without heightening fall risks.

Vision Checks: Good vision is vital for maintaining balance and preventing falls. Schedule regular eye exams to ensure your prescription is current. If you wear glasses, make sure they are appropriate for your daily activities. Don’t hesitate to seek assistance if you notice any changes in your vision, as these can significantly impact your stability.

Home Safety Modifications: Assess your home for potential hazards. Remove loose carpets or secure them with double-sided tape. Improve lighting in hallways and staircases. Consider non-slip mats in bathrooms. Installing grab bars by toilets and in the shower can provide necessary support. Keeping pathways clear of clutter can also create a safer walking environment.

Wear Appropriate Footwear: The right shoes can make all the difference. Choose shoes that offer good support, fit properly and have non-slip soles. Avoid slippers or shoes without backs, which can increase the likelihood of tripping.

Stay Engaged: Social connections are not only beneficial for your mental health but also for your physical well-being. Participate in community programs, attend local events, or explore classes that pique your interest. Staying socially active can keep your mind sharp and your body moving.

Falls are not an inevitable consequence of aging. Through awareness and preparation, we can take significant steps to prevent them. Stay active, aware and engaged for a healthy, happy life. Learn more about staying healthy and fit at connect.bcbsnm.com.
