Ask a Health Care Professional – Protect Your Lung Health

By Latha Raja Shankar, M.D., Chief Medical Officer, Blue Cross and Blue Shield of New Mexico

As we age, our lungs lose some of their ability to move fresh air and oxygen into the body and get rid of waste. While a decrease in lung function is a normal part of the aging process, there are many things you can do to keep your lungs as healthy as possible, for as long as possible.

Why is lung health important?

An essential part of the respiratory system, lungs move fresh air and oxygen into the body while removing waste gases. Beyond helping us to breathe, our lungs also help to fight infections.

What can you do to protect your lungs?

Many choices for better overall health are also good for your lungs. Follow these tips to protect your lungs.

  • Regular annual wellness examinations can help prevent major illnesses even if you feel well. This is especially true for lung diseases, which frequently go undiagnosed until they cause grave symptoms.
  • Engaging in physical activity not only promotes overall health, but it also increases lung capacity. Breathing techniques may help with relaxation and can improve your mood.
  • Avoid smoking. Lung cancer and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, which includes emphysema and chronic bronchitis, are primarily brought on by cigarette smoke. It can also result in long-term lung irritation, which feeds back into persistent bronchitis. Smoking damages lung tissue over time and may potentially cause cancer. It’s never too late to quit smoking.
  • Steer clear of pollution exposure. Outdoor air pollution, chemicals used at home or at work, and radon are examples of pollutants. They can all contribute to lung illness or exacerbate it. Make sure your car and house are smoke-free, and get radon tested. Don’t exercise outside while air quality is poor.
  • Prevent illness and infection: Protect yourself from colds and other respiratory infections by washing your hands frequently, getting vaccinated against the flu, staying home when you’re sick, and practicing good oral hygiene to prevent germs from turning into infections.

The function of our lungs is essential to maintaining our overall health. The truth is that our lungs require daily care and attention just like the rest of our body. Maintaining an active lifestyle, avoiding exposure to pollutants, and staying vigilant about preventing illness and infection can all help to maintain the health of these essential organs.
