As we age, it’s common to face mobility challenges that make it difficult to move around freely. Fortunately, technological advances provide multiple powered options to help people regain, or retain, their independence. In this article, we’ll discuss some different types of electric vehicles. Key factors to consider are portability, cost, and whether the vehicle is designed for indoor or outdoor use, or both.
The first device to consider is the full-sized electric wheelchair. This type of wheelchair is designed for indoor and outdoor use. It provides a comfortable and very stable seating option in a range of sizes to accommodate heavier or larger individuals. The full-sized electric wheelchair can travel long distances on a single charge, with a battery range of up to 20 miles. It has a tight turning radius, so it is easier to maneuver around a home than any of the other mobility options we’ll talk about. However, it’s important to note that this type of wheelchair is heavy and difficult to transport. Normally, it must be loaded onto a vehicle by using a ramp or lift. Perhaps most importantly, because it is designed primarily for indoor use, it is the most likely device to be approved for Medicare assistance.
The second option, and perhaps most versatile, is the portable electric wheelchair. This type of wheelchair is lightweight and easy to transport, making it ideal for seniors who are always on the go. Some models even have a carbon fiber frame and can weigh less than 40 pounds, especially if the batteries are removed. The portable electric wheelchair has a shorter battery range of around 10 miles to 15 miles. However, they can be taken just about anywhere – folded into the trunk of a car, taken on cruises, and boarded on flights.
A third popular option is the electric scooter. This vehicle typically has three wheels and is designed for outdoor use. It is ideal for those who need to cover longer distances. The electric scooter has a battery range of up to 30 miles and can reach speeds of up to 10 miles per hour. However, it’s important to note that the electric scooter is not as stable as a wheelchair and may not be suitable for those with balance issues due to the common three-wheel design. (Four-wheel models are available.) They are also quite heavy and normally must be loaded onto a vehicle using a lift or ramp.
Last is the electric three-wheel bicycle. It provides a fun and eco-friendly way for active seniors to get around. It has a battery range of up to 20 miles and is designed for outdoor use. Depending on the model, pedaling may be required to activate the electric assist, so this is an important factor to consider when comparing bicycles. As with the electric scooter, it is not as stable as a wheelchair and requires the user to have an adequate level of flexibility and balance.
When it comes to the cost of all the above options, prices can vary significantly depending on the brand and retailer. Most models can be purchased from a local retail store (the most expensive option), through the internet, either directly though the brand, through a distributor, or from Amazon.com (usually the cheapest option).
Full-sized electric wheelchairs are typically the most expensive, with prices ranging from $1,500 to $8,000, or more. Portable electric wheelchairs and electric scooters are more affordable, with prices ranging from $800 to $4,000. Electric three-wheel bicycles are the most budget-friendly option, with prices ranging from $800 to $3,000. However you purchase your mobility vehicle, it’s important to be familiar with return policies and warranties.
Further, not all of the options discussed are eligible for Medicare payment. Medicare will only cover 80 percent of the cost of a mobility device if it’s deemed medically necessary and prescribed by a doctor. Full-sized electric wheelchairs and portable electric wheelchairs are more likely to be covered by Medicare, while electric scooters and electric three-wheel bicycles are unlikely to be eligible.
In conclusion, there are several options available for seniors who need assistance with mobility. Each type of electrically powered vehicle has its unique features and benefits, and it’s crucial to carefully consider your needs and budget before making a decision. Consult your doctor and insurance provider to determine which vehicle is right for you and if you are eligible for financial assistance.
